Vijana African Voices Initiative (VAVI) is a youth-led grassroots organization headquartered in Kiambu County, Kenya, dedicated to amplifying the voices, leadership and empowering of Young People. Founded in December 2021 in response to the growing need for inclusive youth participation, VAVI was born from real community experiences, recognizing the barriers young people face; from limited access to sexual and reproductive health (SRHR) information, mental health support and economic opportunities, to restricted participation in governance and decision making spaces.
Through our vision we seek to have Empowered, Skilled and Resilient Youth, VAVI bridges the gap between young people, communities and policymakers by providing safe spaces, youth friendly services, life skills training, advocacy platforms and opportunities for grassroots innovation. We equip adolescents and young people with the knowledge, skills, and leadership capacity to transform their communities and become active agents of change.
Since our inception, VAVI has celebrated milestones that reflect our growing impact. In 2022, we officially registered as a Community Based Organization (CBO) in Kiambu County and by 2023, we launched programs targeting youth empowerment, SRHR awareness, mental health support and economic skills development. Our achievements include empowering more youths, participation at the Forbes African Youth Summit 2023 in Botswana, recognition as 2nd Runner Up in the Founder of the Year Awards (FOYA) Social Founder Category and a successful celebration of our first anniversary, marking years of transformative engagement with youth.
Our work is deeply aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4) and Gender Equality (SDG 5), reflecting our commitment to creating inclusive communities where young people are seen, heard and empowered to lead solutions that reflect their realities.
